Der Basler Künstler Ernst Breitenstein besuchte die Basler Zeichen- und Modellierschule bei Fritz Schider, bevor er als Mitarbeiter von Ernst Stückelberger an den Tellfresken beschäftigt wurde. 1881 reiste Breitenstein nach Paris, wo er vorwiegend Fayencen malte und regelmässig seine Werke im Pariser Salon ausstellte. 1889 wurde der Maler an der Pariser Weltausstellung mit einer Bronzenen Medaille ausgezeichnet. Im selben Jahr kehrte er zurück nach Basel.
The Basel artist Ernst Breitenstein attended the Basel Drawing and Modelling School under Fritz Schider before being employed as an assistant to Ernst Stückelberger on the Tell frescoes. In 1881 Breitenstein travelled to Paris, where he decorated faiences and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon. In 1889, the painter was awarded a bronze medal at the Paris World Exhibition, that same year he returned to Basel. Breitenstein's artistic work includes portraits, landscapes as well as genre depictions, the latter mostly portraying an idyllic rural life.
