Johann Friedrich Dietler war der Sohn des Malers Joseph Felix Dietler. Nach einer Ausbildung bei Charles Germann in Solothurn und einem 11-jährigen Aufenthalt in Paris als Schüler von Antoine-Jean Gros, kehrte Dietler in die Schweiz zurück und machte sich als Porträtist einen Namen. In den Patrizierfamilien von Bern, Solothurn, Freiburg und Basel waren seine Porträts überaus gefragt. Die Motive für seine Genremalereien fand er im Berner Oberland.
Johann Friedrich Dietler was the son of the painter Joseph Felix Dietler. After schooling under Charles Germann in Solothurn and spending eleven years in Paris as Antoine-Jean Gros’s pupil, Dietler returned to Switzerland and made a name for himself as a portraitist. His portraits were in high demand among the patrician families of Bern, Solothurn, Fribourg, and Basel. For his genre paintings he found the motifs in the Bernese Oberland. In addition to portrait and genre painting, Dietler devoted himself to landscape studies and historical paintings. Later, he worked at the Bernese art school as a professor.
