About
Samuel Drukker (*20.11.1957 Goes) is a Dutch artist, whose oeuvre includes oil paintings and drawings. Drukker grew up in Assen, in the province of Drenthe. In 1982, he finished his studies with Matthijs Röling at the Academie Minerva in Groningen. After his education, he worked in Paris and Barcelona. Since 1990, he has taught at the Wackers Academie in Amsterdam. The Hermitage Amsterdam awarded him with the prize of Artist of the Year in 2011.
In his figurative paintings, the artist takes on old testamentary, mythological and erotic themes, in which the human form plays a central role. Accordingly, the figures in his paintings have a higher level of detailed elaboration, as compared to their schematized and almost abstracted backgrounds. Through this ambivalent relation between figures and background, the characters seem isolated and the suggestive expression of their emotions is amplified. Drukker often paints on unconventional mediums like weather-beaten sailcloth and old pieces of wood – surfaces with a history of their own, to which Drukker is adding a further layer of meaning.
